Music Curriculum Guide

Private School in Vermont Winter Concert TGS Putney

Music flourishes at TGS with a diverse program and faculty.

All Grammar School students:

  • sing in a chorus
  • learn to play recorder starting in third grade
  • read music
  • enjoy dancing
  • perform on stage

Music Composition is taught through membership in Music-COMP, Composers Online Mentoring Program, formerly the Vermont Midi Project. Fifth and sixth graders have the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual Opus competitions.

During fall term, the 7th and 8th graders study an instrument of their choice in Studio. Small ensembles and bands are formed, and a Studio Concert is performed.

Theater is presented and enjoyed all year long through numerous class plays. The Mummers Play is a traditional 8th grade performance at their Winter Concert. The program culminates with the production of an annual 7th and 8th grade Spring Musical.

Dance is an integral part of the program, with a focus on creative movement and international folk dance.

As a school, we enjoy singing together at meetings, concerts, and special annual events, including a fall hike to Putney Mountain, and an assembly to honor Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Student musicians have an opportunity to perform at school-wide talent shows during the year and professional musicians from the community are often included in our assembly programs.
